VNZ offers three main types of volunteerism:
Local Volunteers – Zimbabwean residents volunteering in their own communities.
Visiting Volunteers – International or local individuals placed in Zimbabwean communities via VNZ’s host family system.
Online Volunteers – People who contribute their skills remotely from anywhere in the world.

Volunteers highlight their skills, experience and interest. VNZ then matches them with suitable projects and host families, taking into account their preferences, skills, and any relevant cultural considerations. Host family selection is affected by multiple factors including proximity to projects, number and sex of volunteers, specific needs of volunteers, availability during volunteer's period among other factors.

By supporting community-led initiatives, volunteers empower local people to lead change. The ripple effect of mentorship, training, and direct support strengthens families and protects vulnerable children long-term.

English is widely spoken in Zimbabwe, especially in urban and semi-urban areas. In rural zones, Shona or Ndebele may be more common, but host families and coordinators often help with translation.

Volunteers typically self-fund through savings, crowdfunding, or organizational sponsorship. VNZ can provide letters of support or guidance on how to raise funds.

Local volunteers are expected to commit time to community initiatives, attend VNZ training sessions, and act as youth leaders, mentors, or peer educators. They serve as vital change agents in their own neighborhoods.
